About the Architect
Julia Morgan was the first woman to obtain an architecture license in California and the first to graduate from the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
She designed over 700 buildings in California throughout her career. Including iconic buildings such as Hearst Castle and the repair and redesign of the Fairmount Hotel in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.
She also designed many buildings for institutions serving women and girls including many YWCA buildings as well as six buildings for the Mills campus. This includes El Campanil, believed to be the first bell tower on a United States college campus.
Julia Morgan was known for her work ethic and attention to detail. She believed in letting her work speak for itself and shied away from publicity. The following passage from Julia Morgan: Architect of Beauty by Mark Anthony Wilson illustrates this perfectly.
“Such anecdotes from the craftspeople who worked with Julia Morgan illustrate one of her most outstanding qualities as an architect, which can be summed up with this phrase: Attention to detail.” Not only did she carefully oversee every phase of the construction of all her projects, she also closely inspected the work of all of her craftspeople, from fresco artists to tile workers, from cabinetmakers to sculptors. If Julia saw handiwork that she didn’t think was up to her standards, she wouldn’t hesitate to tell the worker to take it out and do it over. This reputation for absolute perfection of every detail made her both feared and admired by her crew, and greatly appreciated by her clients.”
